The project was designed based on the results of a need assessment and a number of meetings and consultations with student government representatives and other school children, teachers, school director, parents and local government officials. Their concerns were mainly related to the poor outdoor facilities in Hotolisht school and the need for financial support and co-operation of different actors.

The main goal of the project was the organization of parents and pupils, for the purpose of solving what they considered an important problem in their community, the poor outdoor facilities of their school. The main objectives of the project were: a) To improve the communication, co-operation and organizational skills of pupils, teachers, parents and other community members and b) To create a friendly and healthy environment through the active involvement and co-operation of all the project beneficiaries and stakeholders.

Project beneficiaries and target area: The project was implemented in Hotolisht community and benefited 530 students and 26 teachers of the school, their parents, other community members and local government officials through improvement of exterior school environment, strengthening of their capacity and improvement of their communication and co-operation. 

Project time frame and the financial support: The project was organized by the Center  “Children Are the Future” with the financial support of the OSCE Presence in Albania, technical and financial contribution of Hotolisht Qender Commune and active involvement of the students, teachers and community members. The project started in December 2009 and was completed at the end of February 2010.

Project Activities: The main activities of the project were divided into:

a) Awareness-raising activities, where there were included meetings, seminars, awareness-raising campaigns on the importance of an active involvement and co-operation of  children, teachers, parents and other community members in the creation and maintenance of a clean and healthy environment.

b) Infrastructure interventions such as: improvement of the school-yard, creation of a specific place for garbage collection, rehabilitation of the old sports ground, planting of ever-green trees around the school yard, construction of a reserved area for gymnastics and athletics as well as the reconstruction of the old garden and spare-time place, which have created a friendly and healthier environment .


All of these activities and interventions and a number of meetings and discussions on conflict resolution and effective ways of communication and co-operation have already provided their impact on the strengthening of community-school relationships and co-operation, improvement of school life and enhancement of students’ and teachers’ motivation. They will also serve as a new model for community involvement in the resolution of various problems and provision of essential services.
